Stop Scrolling for September

You’ve probably hear of Dry January, Stoptober and Movember. The RSPH (Royal Society for Public Health) has announced the launch of Scroll Free September. The worlds first large scale social media-free month.

I must point out that scroll free September is for personal use of social media, not business use. If that a sign of relief I hear?

Social media is such a huge part of our everyday lives. The way we communicate with each other, keep in touch, wish friends happy birthday. As much as there are positive with social media there are also negatives.

Claire Murdoch, NHS England’s national director for mental health highlighted growing concerns that social media was contributing to a potential epidemic in mental ill health among young people.

It’s thought that giving up social media for a month will have health benefits such as better sleep, improved mental health, wellbeing, anxiety and improved body image.

Does the thought of giving up social media break you into a sweat, do you think it’s impossible? You aren’t alone in thinking this. According to research by the RSPH 50% of 18-34 year old that were survey admitted it would be hard or impossible. 1 in 10 18-24 year olds said it would be impossible.

The RSPH have created four different plans that you can choose for Scroll Free September from:

Social Butterfly – Take a break from social media at all social event

Night Owl – Take a break from social media every evening after 6pm

Busy Bee – Take a break from social media when in work

Sleeping Dog – Give up social media in the bedroom and improve your sleep

Try to pick one that you think will be a challenge.

Over at rsph.org.uk you can also discover your social media index to find out how healthy your relationship with social media is. I did the quiz and thankfully I did better than I thought I would.

Instead of being on social media, what will you do with your time?

Will you spend more time working on your business? Spend time on a hobby or learn a new skill? Spend more time with family and friends?

Let me know the comment below with what plan you are going to try and what you might do with the extra time
