Choosing the right social media platform for your business

When starting out in business, we often think that we need to be on EVERY social media platform.

This is a myth. You really don’t need to be everywhere. Sure, grab your social media handles for all the social media platforms so that you have them for future use. However, I recommend starting with building an audience on just one or two platforms. This is so you concentrate on one or two platforms and do them well. If you try to be everywhere you will spread yourself too thin. This is when you can feel overwhelmed and exhausted.

Choosing which platform to focus on can be difficult knowing that you have picked the correct one. It’s difficult to avoid getting FOMO (fear of missing out) but you will thank yourself in the long run. Below are some tips on how to choose the right platforms for you and your business:

Know your audience

Knowing who your ideal client is so important when it comes to marketing your business. When you are speaking to one person in mind it will make your marketing much easier. Think about who your ideal client is.

  • Where does your audience hangout online?
  • Where do they consume content?
  • What problems do you solve for your ideal client?

Like the platform

It’s really important that you like the platform that you are on for your business. It does take a lot of time and energy to build an audience on social media. If you don’t like the platform its going to be hard work, so if you don’t like the platform, choose a different one. It’s ok not to like a social media platform. We all have that “one” that we aren’t keen on.

Trial and error

Trial and error is the best way to find out what works on social media. You will need to test and experiment with the platform that you choose for your business. You can test the type of content you post, the frequency of how often you post and the times you are posting.
Take a look at others within your niche and business category. What platforms are they doing well on? Is it a platform that you enjoy being on? If others in your niche can make a social media platform work, then so can you!

I want you to know that you CAN make any platform work for your business. Social media platforms take time, energy and hard work. You will need to be consistent, post out content that resonates with your audience. When you are posting think, does this entertain, education or engage my audience? Stick with it and keep going. To start with, the growth will be slow and frustrating at times but you can make it happen!
